Hey all,
Do you have any tips for lighting insense sticks? I have a standard cigarette lighter here and can get the flame to start pretty easily, just need any suggestions to know how to hold the stick and to know when it's lit. Any help would be great.

Hold the lighter in one hand and the stick in the ohter. Flick the lighter and
hold the button down with your thumb, then place the stick os that it rests
along your thomb pointing toward the flame. Gently push it forward about an
inch or so and wait a couple of seconds then release the lighter. To tell if its lit,
hold it up toward your nose as if to smell it, but not too close. If you feel the
heat, count to about five and blow it out. If you don't, repeat the steps and
push the stick a bit further into the flame.

Another tip would be to get a zippo or a similar lighter. With them, you can
feel the lighter with the stick, a bit like using a tiny cane. You don't have to
worry about holding the flame lit, it stays lit, and you can concetnrate on tracing
the stick into the flame.

I'd love to know this myself though having never lit a candle before, I'd be very timid about it.
Thanks for the tips as well Cody.

I put them in my mouth like a cegearette and light it like that.
I also have a holder. I put the stick in the holder and bring the flame to it.
Candles I use a match for. I use a match because a lighter sometimes the flame won't tip.
The matches flame can go were you like.

Incense cones are easier to light, using a match.

Agreed.

I don't really understand why you'd put the stick in your mouth. That just
doesn't make any sense to me. You have two hands. Is there a need to inhale
the smoke or something?

I put the stick in my mouth to hold it still.
Now I've got to light a match.
This requires two hands for me.
I light the match, drop the book or box.
Now I can guide the match to the stick because the sticks in my mouth holding still, I've got a hand to locate it exactly, and the match in my other hand for lighting.
I press the match to the stick until it is burnging pretty good.
I shake the match, remove the stick from my mouth and blow gently until it is gloing.
I do this with a lighter too.
I can light a couple sticks at once this way.

Question, though:
Where can you get incents cones?

Anyplace at all. The super market, Walmart you name it.

I use incense cones. I also use a barbeque lighter, one of the long safety lighters. I put the cone in a flat dish or ash tray type thing, just something with a little depth to it and enough space so the cone can move around a little without falling out. A candle holder or anything like that will work fine. I put the lighter exactly where I need it to go to light the cone, hold it steady and hold my hand above where the lighter and cone are touching. Then I press the button and hold it until I feel heat coming from above the lighter. I wait about 5 seconds, then let go of the button, bring the lighter back, and blow out the cone. Way easier and safer than sticks I feel like. But I never did try the sticks at all to begin with so hey, whatever works for you.

I was never able to get the hang of the cones. I could light the sticks without
any trouble, but I could never get the hang of the cones.

Don't they also make incense in the form of big blocks? If so, seems like that would be the easiest to light.
